MLB News: Cubs Extend Nico Hoerner to Six-Year Deal

Contract extension continues to roll on, and we’ve got another big one in MLB. ESPN’s Jesse Rogers reports that the Chicago Cubs and Nico Hoerner have agreed to a six-year contract extension, with financial details still rolling in. Big news out of Chicago on Opening Day. The Cubs lost their opening game of the season to the Washington Nationals.

Hoerner was set to become a free agent after the 2026 season, and Chicago is on an extension frenzy with its latest moves. Just before Opening Day, Pete Crow-Armstrong signed a contract extension to stay in Chicago. It’s another good move for the Cubs, locking down a steady contributor for years to come.

Nico Hoerner Is Staying Put in Chicago

Nico Hoerner will be a Chicago Cubs infielder for the foreseeable future. Hoerner is a seven-year MLB veteran with two Gold Gloves. In 2025, Hoerner posted a career-best 6.2 bWAR in 156 games played.

He’s not a power hitter per se, but Hoerner is still averaging near 40 extra-base hits per season due to a high amount of doubles and triples. In his seven-year career, Nico has never hit more than 10 home runs in a season.

However, he’s an exceptional defender, which is likely the direct reason for Hoerner’s strong bWAR for a player who does not hit home runs. Hoerner earned a Gold Glove for his defensive services in 2023 and 2025.

Cubs Lock Down Another Key Player

Nico Hoerner has been a steady factor in the Chicago Cubs organization since 2022.

Because of his early success, the Cubbies extended Hoerner to a three-year deal worth $35 million. That’s the deal that is set to expire after the 2026 season. One can imagine the financials of this new extension will be similar. Pete Crow-Armstrong was also recently extended, which highlights the Cubs’ willingness to spend.

The 28-year-old Hoerner is also another player the Cubs’ front office believes is a key part of the organization’s future.

Every year since 2021, Hoerner has finished the season with an OPS+ over 100. For a player who doesn’t have a season with more than 10 home runs, it signals the value Hoerner has running the bases and getting on base in general. He stole 43 bases in 2023 and has 131 career stolen bases with the Cubs in seven seasons. A very solid overall player who doesn’t get as much national recognition.
