The Miami Heat is yet to add more talent around newly-acquired Giannis Antetokounmpo since LeBron James signed with the Philadelphia 76ers. Despite loud rumblings involving multiple former All-Stars, the Heat has remained intact for multiple weeks. 

Antetokounmpo, the 31-year-old two-time NBA MVP, is still viewed as one of the league’s top players, and Miami knows it is on the clock in terms of putting the right pieces around the face of the franchise, especially with rival teams stacking talent this offseason. 

The Heat continues to get mentioned as a top suitor for free agents DeMar DeRozan and Bradley Beal. While both players can help round out the Heat roster nicely, neither player is likely to help put the Heat over the top. The

The Miami Heat Trade Idea That Would Make Giannis Antetokounmpo Happy

Given the Heat’s need for more starpower but no longer possessing the assets to make a major trade, there is one under-the-radar name the team could go after. Plus, it’s a former Antetokounmpo teammate. 

In a hypothetical scenario, the Heat call up the Portland Trail Blazers to discuss a deal that brings Damian Lillard, one of the league’s top scorers and shooters, back to his buddy Antetokounmpo for a championship push in South Beach. Here is a proposed framework.

Heat receive: Damian Lillard

Blazers receive: Nikola Jovic, a 2027 second round pick, a 2029 first round pick and a 2031 second round pick 

It is important to reiterate that this trade is entirely hypothetical and intended for some fun debate. So why might this work well for both teams?

Why Miami and Portland Do the Deal

Lillard, who just turned 36, is an interesting option. For a trade to work, Lillard, a nine-time All-Star, would have to approve the transaction because he has a no-trade clause in his contract. But for the opportunity to compete for a champion, reunite with Antetokounmpo and play in a big market? That’s an opportunity that would be extremely hard to turn down.

For Miami, landing Lillard would no doubt be risky. The Heat has reportedly looked to move Jovic for the right price this offseason. Would a trade for Lillard be worth surrendering Jovic, one of Miami’s intriguing young pieces? 

Surely, the Heat’s title odds would boost with Lillard despite the former All-Star set to return after missing the 2025-26 season with a torn Achilles tendon. Lillard is aging and coming off major injury, so there are certainly risks involved in trading for him. But sometimes those risks are necessary when you have an MVP in his prime.

In the 2024-25 season, Lillard was his usual elite self, registering 25 points and seven assists per game. He cashed 38 percent of his 3-pointers. The last time he was on the court, he was in Milwaukee sharing a Bucks uniform with Antetokounmpo. 

It is fair to question if Portland, which re-acquired Lillard last offseason after sending him to Milwaukee three summers ago, would move him again. The Blazers have plenty of faces in the backcourt that need minutes, including newly-acquired 26-year-old star point guard Ja Morant. To help clear the glut of guards, the Blazers could look to move Lillard to allow the younger Morant and Scoot Henderson to get their shine.

Would a lineup featuring (a healthy) Lillard, Andrew Wiggins, Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo move the needle for the Heat in the East?
