Mets-Twins Trade Prediction Lands $100 Million All-Star Outfielder in New York for Luke Weaver, Tobias Myers

With Juan Soto being sidelined due to a calf injury, the New York Mets have been getting exposed for their lack of outfield depth. The Carson Benge experiment hasn’t gone well, and Luis Robert Jr. has cooled after his hot start. Due to the Mets’ aggression with trades across MLB, the speculation and rumors are at an all-time high.

A recent MLB mock trade idea by SI.com’s Ryan Shea features the Mets linking up with the Minnesota Twins for Byron Buxton (maybe he will finally be dealt this season).

Mets-Twins Trade Prediction Features Byron Buxton, Luke Weaver, and Tobias Myers

Here is the full trade breakdown, as Shea proposes it:

“Minnesota receives Luke Weaver, Tobias Myers, Ryan Clifford”

“New York receives Byron Buxton.”:

“In the proposed trade, the Twins send Buxton to New York in exchange for Luke Weaver, Tobias Myers and Ryan Clifford. The pitching tandem of Myers and Weaver helps reinforce Minnesota’s bullpen, filling a massive need for the Twins on the defensive end. Clifford is a highly touted prospect who could give the team a power bat at first base, upgrading a position of weakness with a long-term solution. ”

Due to the name value that Byron Buxton presents, you had to guess that a trade package like this would certainly feature some MLB-caliber players. Well, Shea proposes that the Mets offload Luke Weaver, Tobias Myers, and a prospect in Ryan Clifford to swing this deal.

It’s important to note that Byron Buxton has a no-trade clause attached to his seven-year, $100 million contract, and New York just signed Luke Weaver this offseason and traded for Tobias Myers.

The idea of the Mets trading for Buxton isn’t far-fetched, but this trade package is, because it’s highly unlikely that the Mets will move on from Luke Weaver this quickly. A good replacement could be either Mark Vientos or Brett Baty as trade bait in a potential deal.

Mets Slow Start Accelerates Panic in New York

The New York Mets, notably, are off to a slow start in 2026, which naturally is going to accelerate panic in New York.

After a handful of games without Juan Soto, some analysts/insiders thought the Mets would be okay in his absence, but New York has now lost five straight games and are set to head out west to face the Los Angeles Dodgers.

After the Dodgers, the Mets will head to the Midwest and face the Chicago Cubs. New York is 7-9.

With the potential panic button being pushed early in the season, that usually calls for *panic* moves, and with David Stearns potentially trying to rewrite his offseason wrongs, there’s likely to be some trades in the coming months, whether big or small.
