Mets-Twins Trade Idea Sends 35-Home Run Outfielder to New York in Exchange for Jonah Tong

Are the New York Mets done making trades? Who knows, with David Stearns making the decisions, there is no telling. Some of the additions the Mets have made this offseason via trade include Marcus Semien, Luis Robert Jr., and Freddy Peralta.

The reports all offseason have indicated that the Mets are eyeing the trade market to bring in new players for 2026, and who’s to say they will stop at this point? A recent Bleacher Report article revealed fresh trade packages for top MLB trade candidates, and the New York Mets are named as a suitor for Minnesota Twins center fielder Byron Buxton. However, it would mean giving up prospect pitcher Jonah Tong.

Mets Linked to Byron Buxton?

The New York Mets, naturally, are going to be linked to every high-profile player, but the rumors surrounding the Twins center fielder this offseason have been odd. At first, it was thought that Minnesota would be willing to move off Buxton, who enjoyed a stellar 2025 season with 35 home runs, 24 stolen bases, and an OPS+ of 136 over 126 games.

But then members of the Twins front office said they wouldn’t be moving Buxton, just for Buxton to indicate he would be willing to waive his no-trade clause for the right fit somewhere.

The issue for Buxton has been staying on the field, but he’s now played in over 100 games in each of the last two seasons.

Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller recently mocked Byron Buxton to the Mets, but it would cost the Mets Jonah Tong and Ryan Clifford:

Byron Buxton

GettyByron Buxton is coming off a career-best season in 2025.

“Neither Buxton nor Luis Robert Jr. has ever played anywhere other than center field in the majors, but could the Mets convince one of those Gold Glovers to man left field in 2026? Could also plan on having them more or less equally share the CF and DH duties while maybe dangling Mark Vientos on the trade block to get another corner outfielder.”

Buxton is a two-time All-Star outfielder over his 11-year playing career, and has 168 career home runs to go along with a lifetime .248 average.

Should The Mets Consider This Trade Idea?

The New York Mets have already spent a lot of money this season and are taking on Luis Robert Jr.’s $20 million contract.

It’s not that Byron Buxton doesn’t fit in the Mets outfield, because he absolutely would, as he provides a much higher power upside than Luis Robert, who has had two down offensive seasons; however, New York might do its spending in other areas, like for a starter or another bullpen arm.

Giving up Tong seems far-fetched, but the Mets also fully understand that winning now is the highest priority in the organization.

And it’s important to note that New York just gave up two of its top prospects, Jett Williams and Brandon Sproat, in the trade for Freddy Peralta.
