Mets Trade Prediction Lands Cubs’ $68 Million Starter for Mark Vientos, Ronny Mauricio

The New York Mets have a crowded roster, and the Chicago Cubs may be looking to land another outfielder with the injury news to Seiya Suzuki. It seems like utility players Mark Vientos and Ronny Mauricio have been the main subjects of trade rumors this offseason, but will David Stearns pull the trigger and trade them?

In what was a very active offseason in terms of trades for the Mets, it’s interesting to think what more could be in store. In a recent mlb/mark-vientos-fantasy-stock-could-rise-in-potential-deal-with-chicago-cubs”>MLB mock trade by SI.com, writer Ryan Shea proposes the idea of the Mets offloading Mark Vientos and Ronny Mauricio to the Cubs in exchange for starter Jameson Taillon.

Should the Mets Trade for Jameson Taillon?

Here is where the conversation gets interesting, because the Mets don’t necessarily need a starter, but adding both depth is always beneficial, and New York doesn’t need Vientos or Mauricio anymore in the immediate here and now, other than for depth pieces.

However, Taillon comes with a four-year, $68 million price tag. The Mets have still not decided whether they’re going to extend Freddy Peralta, so the team still has the financial room to take on another contract.

With full playing time on the Cubs, Vientos can thrive in a new MLB organization. Same deal for Mauricio, although this trade idea could be tweaked to keep Mauricio on the Mets, and instead, New York deals either another starter in the deal or a top prospect.

Who Says No to This Trade Idea?

GettyThe New York Mets face a deadline to add Mike Tauchman to the roster.

The Chicago Cubs would likely not trade away Jameson Taillon in this scenario. He’s coming off a 2025 season where he posted a 3.68 ERA over 23 starts, and Taillon made 28 starts the season prior.

At this moment, he’s very valuable to the team’s starting rotation, which dealt with several injuries last offseason.

The Mets might also want to hold onto Mark Vientos for now, but if he doesn’t play much (or produce with the bat) in the early stages of the 2026 season, expect trade rumors to persist.

It’s not an indictment of Vientos as a player, but a change of scenery might lead to a better scenario for Vientos, and David Stearns would ensure the Mets improve in the process.

Meanwhile, an early storyline for the Mets’ season is what they will do with Freddy Peralta and a potential extension. Talks seem to be slow at this moment, but they could pick up whenever the two sides want to make a proposition on where each respective party stands.
