Mets Predicted to Poach Away Yankees 29-Home Run Slugger in $135 Million Deal

The New York Mets have a rather thin outfield at this very moment. After trading away Brandon Nimmo and Jeff McNeil, the Mets have Juan Soto to patrol right field, Tyrone Taylor in center (if they don’t land a star outfielder), and left field is a big question mark. Carson Benge is listed on the Mets depth chart for now as the left fielder, but that’s certainly subject to change.

That left field (and center) question mark certainly can be patched up if the Mets land a high-profile free agent like Cody Bellinger or Kyle Tucker, who are the two top outfielders on the market. If the Mets are unable to land either Bellinger or Tucker, this offseason will be looked at as a big failure in Queens.

Mets Predicted to Land Cody Bellinger in $135 Million Deal

In what is good news for Mets fans, a recent prediction has them landing and poaching away former Yankees outfielder Cody Bellinger.

If David Stearns and Steve Cohen were able to sign Bellinger, that would be the third player this offseason (Devin Williams, Luke Weaver) that the Mets signed who played on the Yankees in 2025.

Bleacher Report’s Tim Kelly recently ran a top free agent predictions piece for the top 10 available players, and Cody Bellinger lands at No. 5 on the list, signing with the Mets on a five-year, $135 million deal:

“On the other hand, nothing has gotten done yet, and the crosstown-rival Mets have needs in the outfield and at first base after trading Brandon Nimmo and allowing the aforementioned Alonso to leave in free agency. Bellinger could be the second notable Yankee to bolt for the Mets in as many winters.”

When Will Cody Bellinger Sign?

Cody Bellinger really seems to be drawing out his own market, but as seven weeks remain in MLB’s offseason period, he will have to make his decision eventually.

While there are no real reports of how close Bellinger is to a potential deal, it has been reported that the Yankees have made him two competitive offers, but it’s also important to know that Bellinger is a Scott Boras client, and Boras’ clients (like Alex Bregman as well) tend to draw out their markets top fish the most lucrative deal out of desperate teams, like the Mets.

Bellinger hit 29 home runs in 2025 with the Yankees, which might be an incentive to return to Yankee Stadium for the long term, where he is sure to be successful, hitting home runs towards the short right field porch.

He is a two-time All-Star, former MVP, and has been a well-above-average hitter for the past three seasons. What makes him so attractive to the Mets is also his ability to play all three outfield positions and first base.

Cody Bellinger’s sweepstakes will be one of the biggest storylines to follow across MLB until he signs, which theoretically could be any day now.
