Mets Poach Away Top International Free Agent from New York Yankees

The New York Mets are just a few pieces/signings away from having a really strong offseason, and some of the team’s additions have come by poaching players from their cross-town rival, the New York Yankees. Devin Williams and Luke Weaver are the biggest names to sign with the Mets after formerly being with the Yankees.

On Thursday, according to Francys Romero, the New York Mets have signed shortstop Wandy Asigen. Asigen had been a Yankee until December, but now signs with the Mets on a $3.9 million bonus deal. He’s considered the most explosive player in the international free agent class, says Romero.

Why Did Wandy Asigen Choose the Mets over the Yankees?

Wandy Asigen had been committed to the Yankees for much of the 2025 calendar year. Still, once the Yankees fired their director of international scouting, Wandy Asigen believed he needed to make a change.

This is BaseballAmerica.com’s assessment of the 16-year-old from the Dominican Republic:

“Long expected to sign with the Yankees, Asigen at one point looked like he might sign with the Rangers, but now is set to sign with the Mets. Asigen ranked second in walks at the U-15 World Cup in 2024, one of multiple international tournaments where he represented the Dominican Republic. He’s one of the youngest players in the 2026 international signing class, so he will play the entire Dominican Summer League season as a 16-year-old, but his tools are advanced beyond his years with a skill set reminiscent of Yankees infielder Jazz Chisholm.”

Wandy Asigen was born in 2009, and is thought to be a five-tool player with exit velocities nearing 110 MPH. As a teenager, that is very valuable in the international signing pool.

This is the second-straight season that the Mets have landed one of the top international free agents, and they hope Asigen develops strongly while playing Dominican summer ball, and will be ready to take the Mets’ organization by storm in a couple of years.

Mets Remaining Offseason Outlook

It’s been a pretty slow and disappointing offseason for both New York baseball teams, but the Mets have been more active than their ‘Big Brother’ Yankees, who now lose out on Asigen, and have yet to make a big splash this hot stove season.

Focusing on the Mets, they are being strongly linked to Kyle Tucker, and a deal is expected to be in place by the end of this week. David Stearns could afford to add another starting pitcher as well, and maybe another outfielder.

If the Mets do not land Kyle Tucker, they will have to make an extremely aggressive pursuit for Cody Bellinger to help with adding offensive production in the outfield, as two players currently slated to be starters (Carson Benge, Tyrone Taylor) have little experience in MLB.
