Mets Insider Sounds the Alarm on Francisco Lindor’s Early-Season Struggles

The 2026 MLB season is still very young, but after a disappointing 2025 campaign, the New York Mets haven’t exactly gotten off on the right foot through 15 games. With a 7-8 record, the Mets have looked strikingly similar to last year’s squad, despite making a slew of changes over the offseason.

One constant was expected to come in the form of All-Star shortstop Francisco Lindor, but he’s endured a fairly rough start to the new season. While this isn’t the first time Lindor has been cold to start the year, this time around, there’s a bit of a different feel when it comes to his poor play, and it led to one Mets insider officially sounding the alarm.

Mets Insider Expresses Concern About Francisco Lindor

Since arriving in New York in 2021, Lindor has been a pillar of consistency. He’s only missed more than 10 games once during his five years in town, and even a broken hamate bone he suffered back in February couldn’t stop him from getting ready for the start of the 2026 season. Not only does Lindor play virtually every day, but he is also among the best players at his position in the league.

Lindor earned his first All-Star selection with the Mets in 2025, when he hit .267 with 31 home runs, 86 RBIs, and 31 stolen bases. Through the first 15 games of the new season, though, Lindor has looked nothing like himself. He is hitting just .167 to this point, and he has failed to rack up a single RBI, with this 15-game drought being the longest of his career.

Lindor has a track record of success, so fans shouldn’t completely give up on him yet, but there is reason to be concerned about his performance. According to Will Sammon of The Athletic, it’s not exactly Lindor’s woes at the plate that are concerning, but rather the slew of mental mistakes he’s making in all facets of the game.

“What makes Lindor’s poor start to the season this time stand out for the wrong reasons goes beyond his offensive numbers,” Sammon wrote. “Uncharacteristically, he has already committed a few mental errors. Forgetting how many outs there are. Getting picked off. Being out of position. This is all unlike Lindor.”

Mets Need Francisco Lindor to Get His Act Together

With Juan Soto currently on the injured list due to a calf injury, that has put an even bigger spotlight on Lindor as the engine that powers the Mets’ lineup. The problem is that, right now, New York’s engine appears to be broken. Repairs can be made, but the team is going to want this sorted out sooner rather than later.

Lindor has shown signs of life as of late, as he’s in the middle of a three-game hit streak, but that hasn’t stopped the Mets from losing four straight games. New York will look to avoid a sweep at the hands of the lowly Athletics when it returns to action on Sunday afternoon, with first pitch currently scheduled for 1:40 p.m. ET.
