Mets Give Concerning Update on Big Offseason Signing

Another day, more injury concerns for the New York Mets.

Jorge Polanco, one of the Mets’ key offseason acquisitions, has been limited to only two games at first base with his new team because of left Achilles tendinitis. Manager Carlos Mendoza said before Thursday’s series finale against the Arizona Diamondbacks that Polanco could require a stint on the injured list if his health does not soon improve.

“There’s days where he comes in and he feels really good, then he does a little bit of defensive work. Then there’s days where he feels it more,” Mendoza said, via SNY. “We’re watching it closely here.”

Polanco Off to Slow Start With Mets

The 32-year-old Polanco was not in the lineup on Thursday against left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez and is day-to-day. Asked if the injury could linger indefinitely, Mendoza admitted it’s “hard to tell.”

Polanco had served as the designated hitter for the first two games of the series, going 2-for-8, and the last four overall. Signed to a two-year, $40 million contract in December, Polanco has gotten off to a slow start. Through 10 games, he is hitting .200 with one RBI and six strikeouts in 40 at-bats.

Polanco’s production pales in comparison to last season with the Seattle Mariners, when he hit 26 home runs — his most since 2021 — and 78 RBI with an .821 OPS. He hit another three homers in 48 postseason at-bats, helping Seattle reach the ALCS.

Coming off that resurgent year, the Mets viewed him as a cheap alternative at first base to five-time All-Star Pete Alonso.

Injury Issues Persist for Mets

Injuries continue to pile up for the Mets, who placed outfielder Juan Soto on the 10-day IL on Tuesday with a right calf strain. The club announced that a typical timetable to return from his injury is two to three weeks, meaning New York will likely be without its most potent hitter for the rest of April.

Infielder Ronny Mauricio was promoted from Triple-A Syracuse to take Soto’s spot on the roster.

Despite Soto’s absence, New York is off to a respectable start at 7-5.
