Mets $8 Million Former All-Star Named Early Trade Candidate Amid Slump

The New York Mets are struggling badly. They are now 7-15 and have lost 11 straight games. Those struggles have sunk them to the bottom of the National League. The Mets struggles from the second half of last season have reared their ugly head again, and now, the moves they made don’t appear to be helping them.

One of their biggest moves was the trade to acquire right-hander and two-time All-Star Freddy Peralta from the Milwaukee Brewers to fortify their pitching staff. He is a free agent at the end of the year, and the Mets had to give up two top prospects in Jett Williams and Brandon Sproat.

David Schoenfield of ESPN listed several possible early trade candidates for every team in Major League Baseball, and assuming that the Mets are out of the picture by the deadline, Schoenfield listed Peralta as a possible trade chip.

“When your superstars are either injured (Juan Soto) or off to a concerning start (Francisco Lindor), the entire enterprise will look like it’s on life support,” Schoenfield wrote. “The Mets probably aren’t this bad. Still, most of David Stearns’ offseason moves look bad so far.

“A Mets collapse could lead to two strong starting pitchers entering the trade market.”

Mets’ Freddy Peralta Named Trade Candidate

Peralta is 2-1 with a 4.05 ERA in his first five starts with the Mets. He won 17 games last season with the Brewers and posted a 2.70 ERA, while also contending for a Cy Young award. He helped Milwaukee win 97 games and clinch the best record in baseball.

The Mets had to give up a lot in order to get Peralta, but so far, the move hasn’t panned out. A lot of their moves seemingly have gone south, which is a bit of a concern as the 2026 season progresses.

Schoenfield listed Jonah Tong as the most likely trade candidate, but had Peralta and Holmes on the list if things continue to go south. As of now, it’s looking like that trend might continue for New York, and if that’s the case, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Peralta moved, especially given that he is in the final year of his contract and is only making $8 million this year.

That could lead to a lot of teams bidding for his services and potentially giving the Mets some very good offers for him. New York would then be smart to capitalize on his value before he hits the free agent market.

Peralta Trade Status Hinges on Mets Trajectory

If the Mets can turn things around, then Peralta likely stays in New York. They built their roster to compete for a World Series title. However, they have done anything but that thus far.

If they are out of contention, then the Mets will be well-positioned to sell at the trade deadline, and Peralta could be one of their top candidates. It will be interesting to see if New York is able to fix things after a dreadful start.

They still don’t seem to have fully bounced back from their 2025 collapse.
