Mavericks Make Final Decision on Cooper Flagg vs Grizzlies

On Friday, February 27, the Dallas Mavericks will host the Memphis Grizzlies.

The rookie superstar Cooper Flagg is not expected to be a part of the action.

According to the Mavericks’ injury report, Flagg has been ruled out for the night once again. The Rookie of the Year candidate continues dealing with a mid-foot sprain, which has kept him out of the mix lately.

The Mavericks Aren’t Putting A Timeline On Cooper Flagg’s Injury

Without a timeline in place for Flagg, the Mavericks are rolling with the idea that he’s going to be day-to-day until further notice.

So far, the Mavericks haven’t updated Flagg to questionable, meaning he still has quite a way to go before he’s on pace to make his return.

Friday’s action against the Grizzlies will mark the sixth absence in a row for Flagg. The last time the Mavericks had him on the court was during the team’s second-straight road matchup, which took place in Arizona against the Phoenix Suns.

At the time, Flagg checked in for 35 minutes. He shot 8-20 from the field, scoring 27 points. The young rookie also came down with five rebounds and dished out two assists while snatching up a steal. Despite his strong outing, Flagg and the Mavericks lost to the Suns 120-111.

Since Flagg has been out for the Mavericks, Dallas has just two wins in five games. Their season of struggles continues as they hope to get their standout rookie back on the court soon enough.

Where Flagg’s Rookie Of The Year Campaign Stands

Despite dealing with an injury, Flagg is undoubtedly still viewed as the NBA’s Rookie of the Year favorite.

While there is another strong contender over in the Eastern Conference with Charlotte Hornets sharpshooter, Kon Knueppel, Flagg’s pre-injury performance had him in runaway territory.

Before going down, Flagg had 49 games of action under his belt. The rookie saw the court for 34.1 minutes per game. He shot 48% from the field and knocked down 30% of his shots from beyond the arc.

At this stage of the season, Flagg is posting averages of 20.4 points, 6.6 rebounds, 4.1 assists, and 1.2 steals per game.

In the NBA’s latest Rookie of the Year ladder, NBA.com’s Steve Aschburner pushed Knueppel to the front of the line as the Hornets rookie’s excellent three-point shooting was too good to overlook for the week.

Meanwhile, Flagg missed his fourth set of action at the time. The lack of availability pushed him back one spot, placing him in front of Philadelphia 76ers‘ VJ Edgecombe.

“Flagg was scratched from Tuesday’s game at Brooklyn (left midfoot sprain), his fourth in a row with the injury that sidelined him at All-Star Weekend,” Aschburner wrote. He’s been sitting on 999 total points, still second-most in his class despite his eight missed games. No wonder the shortest month of the calendar feels so long to Mavs fans.”

For the time being, Flagg will remain a spectator. The Mavericks and the Grizzlies are slated for an 8:30 PM ET tip on February 27.
