A man shot by Fort Collins police while holding a woman pushing a stroller at gunpoint was convicted of kidnapping, menacing and other charges connected to the encounter, according to the 8th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.
Colten Sirio, 33, was found guilty of six counts of kidnapping, two counts of child abuse, felony menacing and reckless endangerment on Wednesday after a jury trial, the district attorney’s office said in a news release.
Sirio was shot by Fort Collins police on Feb. 7 after officers responded to a call in a neighborhood near the Colorado State University campus about a suspicious man walking with a woman pushing a stroller.
Officers found Sirio with the woman near City Park Avenue and West Elizabeth Street and tried to arrest him on a warrant in a separate case when he pulled out a gun and pointed it at the woman, according to the DA’s office.
Fort Collins Police Officer Ryan Fandre shot Sirio in the shoulder after he did not follow police instructions and kept walking while pointing the gun at the woman. The district attorney’s office later found Fandre was legally justified in using force in the incident.
Sirio faces a minimum sentence of 72 years and up to 216 years in prison, according to the district attorney’s office. He’s set to be sentenced Feb. 3.
