Man fatally shot in East Oakland, city’s first homicide in eight weeks

OAKLAND — In the city’s first homicide in eight weeks, a man was fatally shot Wednesday afternoon in East Oakland, authorities said.

No other information was immediately released about the man.

The shooting happened about 2:35 p.m. Wednesday in the area of 71st Avenue and Hamilton Street, a mostly residential area.

Police found the man with at least one gunshot wound to the torso. Officers immediately began CPR but he was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

A motive for the shooting was under investigation. No arrests were announced and no suspect information was released.

The killing is the 72nd homicide investigated by Oakland police this year, and the first since Sept. 28 when a 32-year-old man suffered fatal gunshot wounds at a homeless camp in the 600 block of 29th Street in West Oakland.

Last year at this time police had investigated 113 homicides in the city.
