OAKLAND — A 25-year-old man fatally wounded by gunfire while driving Monday night in East Oakland was still able to drive several blocks into San Leandro, where he crashed, authorities said.

The name of the man, an Oakland resident, has not been released pending notification of his family.
The shooting happened around 11:16 p.m. Monday in the 9800 block of MacArthur Boulevard.
Police responding to a gunshot detection system alert found dozens of shell casings but no victim.
It turned out the man had driven several blocks before his car cashed a few minutes later at the intersection of Durant Avenue and MacArthur Boulevard, in San Leandro, police said.
He was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Police have not said if the man was shot by someone in another vehicle or someone on the street.
A motive has not been determined yet and no arrests have been made.
The killing is the 33rd homicide investigated by Oakland police this year. Last year at this time police had investigated 41 homicides in the city.
