Man charged with murder in 2022 killing of Morgan Park family

A man has been charged with fatally shooting an 81-year-old woman and her two children inside their Morgan Park home in 2022.

Zavier Griffin, 21, was arrested Friday and charged in connection with the shooting that occurred between April 4 and April 5, 2022, in the 11300 block of South Green Street, Chicago police said.

Officers conducting a well-being check discovered Arteria Riley, 81, her daughter, Thomas Ann Riley, 64, and her son, Ruben Riley, 61, all shot to death inside their home.

Griffin, of Auburn Gresham, faces a dozen felony charges, including first-degree murder, aggravated criminal sexual assault and home invasion with a firearm.

In 2023, Griffin was charged with one felony count of unlawful use of a weapon in connection with the shooting. Police sought murder and sexual assault charges, though prosecutors, at the time, were not convinced.

Arteria Riley was a retired postal worker and widow who raised her family at the home, according to neighbors. Her daughter worked as a secretary and finance manager at St. Philip Neri School. People grew concerned when she didn’t show up for work that week.

“They are the kind of people who would give you the shirt off their backs,” one neighbor said. “I have no idea why they would meet such a violent end.

The motive for the shooting remains unknown.

Griffin is scheduled to appear in court Saturday for a detention hearing.
