Man charged in West Loop shooting, robbery attempt

An Austin man has been charged with attempted murder following a shooting and attempted robbery over the weekend in the West Loop.

Desmond White, 32, is accused of trying to rob a 23-year-old man about 1:40 a.m. Sunday in the 200 block of North Morgan Street.

The victim was walking down the street when White exited a Ford sport utility vehicle and demanded the victim’s wristwatch, Chicago police and court documents said.

White fired shots at the victim, who returned fire and struck White, according to court documents. The victim was not injured in the incident.

White got a ride to Rush Hospital and was then taken in critical condition to Stroger Hospital, where he was treated for his gunshot wound, court documents said.

He is charged with one felony count each of attempted murder, attempted armed robbery and armed habitual criminal.

During his initial court hearing Tuesday, a judge ordered White held in jail while he awaits trial.

His next court date is Oct. 29.
