A man has been charged with murder in connection with the fatal shooting of a 19-year-old woman in the Back of the Yards neighborhood last summer.
Elijah Stiffened, 20, was charged with one felony count of first-degree murder and two felony counts of attempted first-degree murder for his alleged involvement in the shooting that killed Cyra Magby, according to Chicago police.
Magby was driving with two friends, both also 19, on June 11 when Stiffened approached in a silver SUV and opened fire in the 800 block of West Garfield Boulevard, police said. Magby was shot in the back and pronounced dead at the University of Chicago Medical Center that night. The two other women in the car weren’t injured.
After she was shot, Magby tried to speed away but swerved and drove head-on into a Volkswagen Jetta with two people inside. They had minor injuries.
Magby was shy and reserved, but she was “picture perfect,” her mom, Erica Price, told the Chicago Sun-Times last year. Magby was a bagger at a downtown Mariano’s and enjoyed playing basketball for her Englewood STEM High School team and battling her friends on Fortnite.
Magby was the middle child of five kids and was a natural helper, her mom said. She often pitched in to help her autistic brother, routinely picking him up from the school bus.
“I don’t wish this pain on no mother,” Price said at the time. “It’s indescribable to lose a child over something real senseless.”
Police arrested Stiffened on Monday in the 2700 block of South California Avenue. He’s scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.
