A 28-year-old man was arrested Sunday on suspicion of attempted murder after a shooting in Denver’s Washington Park sent another man to the hospital, police said Monday.
Ryan Egelston is being held in Denver’s Downtown Detention Center on investigation of attempted first-degree murder, according to court records.
Denver officers responded to reports of a shooting on the west side of Washington Park at 2:14 p.m. Sunday, where hundreds of people had gathered to enjoy the break from wintry weather.
Paramedics took one man, who has not been publicly identified, to the hospital and Denver police officials said he is expected to survive.
The shooting started as an argument between Egelston and an unknown person in Washington Park on Sunday, police said. Egelston allegedly shot at the person’s back but missed and a second shot hit another nearby man.
Witnesses told the Denver Post on Sunday that the bullet entered the man’s neck and went out his face. Police have not confirmed this information.
Egelston fled the scene and was arrested just blocks away near East Kentucky Avenue and South Downing Street, Denver police said.
The 28-year-old appeared in Denver County Court on Monday morning for an advisement hearing but has not officially been charged, according to court records. His next court appearance has not been scheduled.
