A male inmate was pronounced dead Saturday morning at Denver’s Downtown Detention Center, according to the Denver Sheriff Department.
The department wrote in a news release that the inmate was found unresponsive in a housing unit at the jail about 6 a.m., and a medical emergency team tried unsuccessfully to revive him.
Deputies did not say what may have caused the inmate’s death.
“To ensure the investigation is not compromised, we are limited in what information can be shared at this time,” the department wrote.
Denver police are investigating the incident. The inmate will be identified by the medical examiner’s office, which also will determine his cause of death.
