Los Angeles Lakers Make Major LeBron James Decision Ahead of Suns Game

The Los Angeles Lakers will have LeBron James available on the second night of a back-to-back on Friday against the Phoenix Suns, a notable decision as the team continues its push for playoff positioning.

With both Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves sidelined due to injuries, Los Angeles is leaning heavily on its 41-year-old star despite the condensed schedule.

The Lakers remain within reach of the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference, trailing the Denver Nuggets by just one game with only two contests remaining in the regular season.

Rare Back-to-Back Appearance for LeBron James

Friday will mark only the second time this season that James has played on consecutive nights.

The first instance came at the end of March, when he followed a triple-double performance — 21 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds in a win over the Washington Wizards — with a 14-point, six-assist outing in a victory against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The decision to have James suit up again underscores the urgency surrounding the Lakers’ playoff positioning, particularly given the current roster limitations.

James Leads Lakers Past Warriors

James is coming off another dominant performance in Thursday’s 119-103 win over the Golden State Warriors.

He finished with 26 points, eight rebounds and 11 assists in 32 minutes, leading the Lakers in all three categories. The performance helped Los Angeles secure its first win since losing Dončić and Reaves to injury.

James briefly exited the game in the second half with a right hand issue but later returned. He said afterward that the injury is something he has been managing since March.

The Lakers will again rely on that level of production as they navigate a critical stretch without two of their primary offensive options.

Lakers Adjusting Without Dončić, Reaves

The absence of Dončić and Reaves has reshaped the Lakers’ offensive structure.

Dončić, who averaged 33.5 points, 8.3 assists and 7.7 rebounds this season, has been ruled out for the remainder of the regular season while recovering from a hamstring strain. Reaves, who averaged 23.3 points and 5.5 assists, is expected to miss several weeks with an oblique injury.

That has shifted the burden back onto James, who had previously taken a step back in terms of usage while playing alongside both guards.

“Everything,” James said when asked what the team needs from him. “Nothing changes for me, it’s just back to the old ways. I gotta give them my leadership both on the floor and off the floor. I gotta lead in all facets on the court, both ends.”

James added that he is prepared to take on that responsibility as the Lakers close out the regular season and prepare for the playoffs.

Supporting Cast Steps Up

While James remains the focal point, the Lakers have also received contributions from role players during this stretch.

Players such as Deandre Ayton (21 points and 5 rebounds) Luke Kennard (14 points and 8 assists) and Jake LaRavia (16 points, 7 rebounds and 3 steals) have taken on larger roles, while younger contributors like Bronny James have seen increased opportunities.

Still, the team’s overall success continues to hinge on James’ ability to control the game on both ends of the floor.

Suns Rest Key Players Ahead of Matchup

The Suns will also be shorthanded.

Devin Booker has been ruled out due to right ankle injury management, while Jalen Green is listed as questionable with right knee soreness.

Phoenix is currently positioned in the play-in tournament, adding another layer of intrigue to Friday’s matchup.

With playoff seeding still at stake and key players sidelined, the Lakers are turning back to James to carry the load — even on a back-to-back — as they attempt to close the regular season on a strong note.
