Los Angeles Dodgers Recent Pitcher Claimed by Nationals Off Waivers

The Los Angeles Dodgers have made several roster moves over the past week after the MLB trade deadline has officially come and gone.

One of their recent moves was designating 3-year pitcher Wyatt Mills for assignment.

Mills, 31, has pitched 6.1 innings for the Dodgers this season, and was an obvious cut candidate due to his age and ineffectiveness.

Well, at least one MLB team sees some value in the funky right-hander, as the Washington Nationals have claimed him off waivers, which is one of a few ways teams can still acquire players after the trade deadline.

MLBTR.com’s Darragh McDonald broke the Wyatt Mills news, and wrote this about the 31-year-old:

“Mills, 31, began the season with the Dodgers on a minor league deal. That club selected his contract in May. The sidearmer was shuttled between Triple-A and the majors for a few months, making six scattered appearances in the big leagues. He allowed four earned runs and struck out five while working around nine walks, hitting two batters and throwing a wild pitch. He now has a 6.14 earned run average in 48 1/3 big league innings.”

He has since been optioned to AAA Rochester, and will serve as an emergency arm for the Washington Nationals. The Dodgers have Thursday off after being swept by the Chicago Cubs, while the Washington Nationals will conclude their series with the Phillies on Wednesday evening.

The Seattle Mariners drafted Wyatt Mills in the 3rd round of the 2017 MLB draft. He then made his MLB debut with the Mariners in 2021.

Across 48.1 total MLB innings, Mills carries an ERA of 6.14 with 42 strikeouts.

Between the years of 2023 and 2025, he made no MLB appearances.

Over the 6.1 innings he pitched with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Mills walked nine batters and allowed five runs (four earned).

It will be interesting to see what type of production he can give the Nationals after being claimed off waivers.
