Los Angeles Dodgers Make Major Opening Day Roster Decision

The Los Angeles Dodgers are heading into the 2026 season with very high expectations again. The back-to-back reigning World Series champions once again have an incredibly stacked roster heading into the 2026 campaign, and they only added to it this offseason.

The Dodgers notably made a monster splash in free agency this year, as they signed star outfielder Kyle Tucker to a four-year, $240 million contract. This was not the only big free agent who the Dodgers brought in during this offseason, though, as they also signed star closer Edwin Diaz. They also re-signed Miguel Rojas, Kiké Hernandez, and Evan Phillips. With this, there is no question that the Dodgers are entering the season with plenty of confidence regarding their roster.

Now, with the start of the 2026 season almost here for the Dodgers, they have made a notable decision when it comes to their Opening Day roster.

Los Angeles Dodgers Adding Infield Prospect Alex Freeland to Their Opening Day Roster

The Dodgers made some notable roster moves, as they assigned Hyeseong Kim, Nick Senzel, Jack Suwinski, and Seby Zavala all to their minor league camp. With this, that has opened the door for the Dodgers to call up one of their most intriguing prospects.

According to the Athletic’s Fabian Ardaya, the Dodgers have told infield prospect Alex Freeland that he has made their Opening Day roster.

“Alex Freeland was informed he made the Dodgers, per source,” Ardaya posted on X.

Freeland making the Dodgers’ major league roster is notable, as he is considered one of their most promising youngsters. MLB.com has Freeland as the Dodgers’ second-best infield prospect and eighth-best prospect overall. With this, he is a young player who has the potential to become an impactful player in the majors, and he will be looking to be just that after getting this big opportunity with the Dodgers.

Freeland appeared in his first 23 major league games this past season with the Dodgers, where he had two home runs, six RBIs, and a .190 batting average. Overall, he had some growing pains during his first chance on the major league roster, but he undoubtedly has the potential to break out for Los Angeles this campaign.

Freeland will now give the Dodgers another young option to work with on their major league roster. He will certainly be a player to watch very closely during the season, as he has the potential to make an impact for the National League West club.

Dodgers’ Freeland Is a Prime Breakout Candidate to Watch This Season

When looking at how well Freeland has played in the minors, the possibility of him breaking out with the Dodgers this season is undoubtedly there. During this past season with Triple-A Oklahoma City, he had 16 home runs, 18 stolen bases, 82 RBIs, and a .263 batting average in 106 games. This is after he had 18 home runs, 74 RBIs, and a .260 batting average in 136 games split between Single-A+, Double-A, and Triple-A during the 2024 season.

With this, there is a lot to like about Freeland’s game, and it will be fascinating to see how he performs after making Los Angeles’ roster from here.
