The Detroit Lions moved on from wide receiver Lawrence Keys III this week. But it wasn’t long before the Lions brought back a different wideout they parted with a day prior to cutting Keys — Tarik Black.
The Lions announced on their official X account Wednesday afternoon the team signed Black back to the training camp roster. In a corresponding move, the Lions placed tight end Miles Kitselman on reserve/injured.
On Monday, the Lions released Black to sign a different tight end — Nick Muse.
Black has bounced around the league since first joining the Indianapolis Colts as an undrafted free agent in May 2021. He made his NFL regular season debut with the New York Jets in 2021.
During his only game, Black caught one pass for 10 yards.
That has been Black’s only action in the NFL regular season. Since the start of the 2022 campaign, he has experienced stints on the practice squad for the Baltimore Ravens, and Miami Dolphins. In 2024, he spent training camp with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Black will rejoin the Lions roster as one of 11 wide receivers.
Lions Sign WR Tarik Black Again
GettyThe Detroit Lions brought back wide receiver Tarik Black two days after waiving him.
Clearly, Black is a long shot to make the Lions roster. He’s struggling to stay on it with 90 spots.
But it’s also apparent that there’s something the organization likes about Black. Otherwise, the Lions wouldn’t have re-signed the wideout so quickly this week.
Black played college football for Michigan and Texas from 2017-20. He spent his first three collegiate campaigns with the Wolverines. In 21 games, Black posted 40 catches, 507 yards and two touchdowns.
At Texas during the COVID-19 pandemic 2020 season, he had 10 receptions, 240 yards and a score.
This past January, Black was part of the 2026 UFL Draft. The Louisville Kings picked him on Day 2. Black helped lead Louisville to the 2026 UFL Championship.
Black first joined the Lions on June 17.
Lions Lose TE Miles Kitselman to Injury
GettyThe Detroit Lions placed tight end Miles Kitselman on the reserve/injured list.
The Lions only had space to bring back Black because Kitselman is going to be sidelined with an injury.
Kitselman was one of Detroit’s undrafted free agents from this past spring. He signed with Detroit after spending college at Alabama and Tennessee. The tight end also had one year at a community college in Kansas.
With the Volunteers, Kitselman became a bigger part of his offense’s passing attack. In his final 24 games, he had 48 catches, 554 receiving yards and six touchdowns. Kitselman also scored a rushing touchdown.
With the loss of Kitselman, the Lions still have six tight ends on their active roster. That’s in part because of the addition of Muse two days ago.
Starter Sam LaPorta, who suffered a back injury in November, has returned healthy. The Lions also have Brock Wright, Jackson Meeks, Thomas Gordon and Zach Horton to go with Muse.
At wide receiver, the Lions possess Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, Isaac TeSlaa, Cedrick Wilson Jr., Tay Martin, Dominic Lovett, Tom Kennedy, Lucky Jackson, Greg Dortch, and Malik Cunningham in addition to Black.
