We must lead nationfrom Trump’s darkness

Since Donald Trump returned to the Oval Office, it feels as though I wake up to news about a new executive order being signed every morning.

Whether federal funding for a beneficial program is being cut or the “Gulf of America” is being introduced, I find myself becoming increasingly disappointed but not surprised. I write today to remind people of the importance of staying informed. Desensitization is something I believe many Americans deal with, as we are unsure of the steps we can take to mitigate the damage that has already been done. There is not a time more important than now to unite and speak up about these new orders and any injustices Trump and his cabinet cause to Americans.

It is a choice to stay ignorant during a time like this — be part of the change. Lead yourself toward an America that you and future generations can be proud of.

S.J. should maketransit a priority

San Jose’s public transportation system is overdue for an upgrade.

While the city focuses on expanding roads and bike lanes, VTA buses and light rail remain unreliable, infrequent and inaccessible to many residents. Riders face long wait times, poor connections and inconsistent service, making it difficult for people — especially students, seniors and low-income workers — to rely on transit.

If we want a city that is truly accessible and environmentally conscious, public transportation must be a priority, not an afterthought.

Schools targetedagain in budget cuts

Re: “San Jose district to close three schools” (Page B1, Feb. 27).

I am deeply disheartened by the Franklin-McKinley School District’s decision to shut down three of their elementary schools. Time and time again, the school system takes the blow when it comes to budget cuts. It is genuinely appalling that the education of our future leaders continues to be of such low priority for our government.

Students who have created a community at these schools will now be ripped away from what they know, crammed into another overcrowded and underfunded school, and expected to function as normal. Children who don’t have a sense of security at home can at least count on their school to provide that for them. However, these children no longer have either.

As a community, it is essential that we put students first. Sacrificing their quality of education will never yield positive results.

Tariffs could furtherstunt housing growth

Donald Trump’s proposed tariffs on Canadian and Mexican imports could worsen the U.S. housing crisis by raising construction costs.

With San Jose already struggling with housing affordability, this increased cost of materials could delay housing projects and development that our community desperately needs. As a San Jose resident, I have witnessed firsthand families becoming homeless due to the lack of affordable options.

We need leaders who understand that housing stability is essential for thriving communities.

Trump has nationadrift morally

Re: “Despite Trump’s lies, Ukraine support critical” (Page A6, Feb. 25).

In just three weeks in office, President Trump has illustrated that he hasn’t been able to accommodate the Russians by shutting the Ukraine War down in one day as promised.

Furthermore, he is adding a moral stain on American liberty by asking Ukraine for half of its mineral wealth in exchange for American arms. American liberty is not a mercenary cause.

Regardless of our support for Israel, it’s time to get on the right side of morality.

Trump is leading U.S.to moral cesspool

Re: “America’s most shameful vote ever at U.N.” (Page A7, Feb. 27).

It is indeed shameful that the United States voted against a resolution calling for Russia to take accountability for its war crimes in Ukraine.

It is also shameful that the Trump government wants to set aside $50 billion to set up camps for immigrants.

My question is, what is it going to take to get us out of the moral cesspool into which Trump is leading this country?
