The future and impending free agency of NBA superstar LeBron James will be a major talking point throughout the offseason until the 41-year-old decides where he’ll play next season. The Los Angeles Lakers have said they want him back, but teams around the league will be vying for his services, despite James being the oldest player in the league.
Most recently, in a surprise twist, James was urged to join the Minnesota Timberwolves, a team he hadn’t been linked to in free agency before. While the star has praised franchise centerpiece Anthony Edwards in the past, he was now told it would be a good move to join the Timberwolves in the final chapter of his NBA career.

Writing in a piece for The Athletic, Timberwolves reporter Jon Krawczynski floated out the idea of James going to Minnesota to play with Edwards and their roster for the final spot of his illustrious career.
“I highly, highly doubt LeBron would want to finish out his playing days in Minnesota, but let me assure him that we have better hotels here than they have in Memphis,” he wrote. “Other than the weather, the basketball situation makes a ton of sense. He could play with a young star in Anthony Edwards, whom he really enjoys, and would be surrounded by great defenders who could take the pressure off him on that end.”
Krawczynski was one of many staff writers for The Athletic discussing James’ free agency and uncertain future, but in his argument as to why the star should join the Timberwolves, he said it would be good for both sides involved.
“Meanwhile, he would immediately address one of the biggest weaknesses the Timberwolves have by installing one of the smartest players to ever play with a group that often struggles with decision-making. Plus, the traffic is so much lighter in the Twin Cities than in L.A. or the Bay Area!” he added.
“So c’mon, Bron; pull a couple of those Cleveland coats out of storage and give yourself one more real chance in Minnesota.”
The Timberwolves have been playing well with Edwards leading the charge, but like if James were to join several other teams he’s been linked to, it would likely have to come on a smaller contract.
Does LeBron Really Leave The Lakers In Free Agency?
James picked up his player option with the Lakers for this past season and is now set for free agency for the first time in nearly a decade.
A ton has been made about where he’ll go next in what expects to be the final chapter of his NBA career, but for now, that remains undetermined.
Along with reports linking him to stay in Los Angeles, the Golden State Warriors, Cleveland Cavaliers, and New York Knicks have all been the most mentioned teams as potential landing spots.
They prevailing thought is that if James were to leave the Lakers and go somewhere else in hopes of winning his fifth NBA championship, it would have to come on a smaller contract, likely anywhere from a minimum to a roughly $14 million mid-level exception.
James has remained mum about his future plans, and until he announces a decision, he’ll be keeping fans, and the entire sports world as a whole, on the edge of their seats as to what he does next.
