LeBron James Linked to Surprise Team if Lakers Era Ends in Free Agency: Report

A new report has linked LeBron James to a surprise potential move across Los Angeles, with one insider claiming the NBA superstar would consider joining the Los Angeles Clippers if his era with the Los Angeles Lakers ends in free agency.

James enters this offseason as an unrestricted free agent for the first time in his Lakers tenure, and sources say retirement is not on the table. He wants one more championship run, and he does not believe the current Los Angeles Lakers roster is built to deliver one. The possibility of James teaming with Kawhi Leonard immediately sparked speculation around what could become one of the most shocking late-career pivots in NBA history, especially with the Clippers positioned to reshape their roster this offseason.

A source close to James told The Daily Mail on Thursday that the 41-year-old would consider crossing town, citing the Clippers’ draft position and the appeal of pairing with Leonard.

“They have a great draft position, and to play with Kawhi Leonard and a few other pieces they might be able to add could be pretty awesome,” the source said. “There are many avenues to pursue.”

James and the Clippers: What New Report Says

The same source made clear James has not closed the door on the Lakers.

“There is a way back to the Lakers,” the source told the Mail. “He wasn’t afforded a full healthy team with Luka [Doncic] out with injury.”

James told reporters after the Thunder swept Los Angeles that he did not know what the future held, adding only, “I left everything I could on the floor.”

James averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists and 6.1 rebounds during the 2025-26 season, operating behind Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves in the offensive hierarchy. He then carried a depleted squad past Houston in six games before Oklahoma City closed the door in a sweep, according to ESPN‘s Dave McMenamin.

Could LeBron Realistically Join the Clippers?

The Clippers’ viability hinges on the NBA’s investigation into Kawhi Leonard’s endorsement deal with Aspiration. If the league voids Leonard’s contract — Commissioner Adam Silver has called cap circumvention a “cardinal sin” — Los Angeles would gain the cap room to pursue James seriously.

Leonard, 34, averaged 28.2 points this season along with 6.3 rebounds and 1.9 steals across 59 games. Clippers head coach Tyronn Lue adds another dimension. James and Lue won a title together in Cleveland in 2016, giving any Clippers pitch a trust factor other suitors may not be able to replicate.

James trimmed $2.7 million off his Lakers deal in 2024 to ease cap pressure. Agent Rich Paul also let something slip on the Game Over podcast when pressed on a Clippers scenario.

“With the Clippers? I like the Clippers,” Paul said, according to EssentiallySports.

ESPN and Sports Illustrated both flagged the Clippers as a legitimate option, with SI‘s Liam McKeone ranking them fourth among the four most realistic destinations behind Golden State, Cleveland and a Lakers return. League personnel surveyed by ESPN also cited New York and Denver as teams in the mix.

Whether James ultimately stays with the Lakers, tests free agency or seriously considers the Clippers, the report is likely to intensify speculation around the future of both Los Angeles franchises as the NBA offseason approaches. Any further developments involving James, Leonard or potential roster moves could quickly reshape the Western Conference landscape.
