The offseason is beginning to heat up for LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers.Â
Fresh off a second-round sweep at the hands of the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Lakers were informed directly what kind of changes they need to make this summer in order for them to compete with the NBAâs elites.Â
While the Lakers front office compiles a plan to take a leap forward from last season, theyâll have to sort things out with James, who is set to enter unrestricted free agency for the first time since joining the franchise in 2018.Â
According to Bleacher Report NBA insider Eric Pincus, the Lakers have a vision. And that’s to move forward without James on the roster.

In a matter of weeks, James will either sign a new contract with the Lakers or move to a different team. At this point, one option feels more likely than the other.Â
âStill, building properly long-term around (Luka) DonÄiÄ is the priority (for the Lakers),â Pincus wrote. âThe Lakers have high hopes to take a step forward this summer, and that’s without James. If their plans fail, that could lead to one more season with the future Hall of Famer.â
If Los Angeles is set to close the chapter on its partnership with James, thatâll leave the soon-to-be 42-year-old James having to search for a new home, unless he chooses to retire.Â
Coming off a season in which he averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds and 7.2 assists while shooting over 51% from the field, James will undoubtedly absorb attention from multiple teams if he hits the open market.Â
According to an earlier report by The Athletic, if the Lakers express they are ready to move on from James, the four-time NBA MVP is expected to draw interest from the Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors.Â
âBut Golden State and Cleveland could try to lure the NBAâs all-time leading scorer in an effort to win now â especially if James senses the Lakers are set on moving on in a different direction without him,â wrote The Athleticâs Dan Woike and Sam Amick.

It appears the only way James is not a Laker next season is if the Lakers demonstrate what Pincus reported â that they desire to move on.Â
If James senses he isnât highly desirable to the Lakers anymore, thatâs where teams competing for his services really have a shot at landing the 41-year-old star.Â
Last month, NBA insider Brian Windhorst reported James would rather remain a Laker and finish his career with the franchise â if the Lakers were to offer a new contract James would deem honorable.
Windhorst stated James would accept a pay cut if the Lakers provided a reasonable explanation for it, such as having a clear vision on how to improve the roster to compete for a championship.
In May, James stated on his podcast that heâll make a decision when he feels the time is appropriate. Perhaps what James meant was when the Lakers would present a new contract offer for him to consider.
In Pincusâ report, he predicted James will ink a multi-year contract with the Warriors. That prediction could be spot on if James and the Lakers agree itâs time to part ways.
