NBA icon LeBron James called out Ron Harper for some critical comments about his parenting of Bronny James. The Los Angeles Lakers superstar remembered Harper’s insult from All-Star Weekend and finally responded during the latest episode of his Mind the Game podcast. LeBron fired back at Harper while co-host Steve Nash laughed and kept the conversation going.
James dropped the following insult towards Ron and made sure to praise his son Dylan Harper to keep him out of the drama:
“Dylan is great. I mean, his daddy (Ron) ain’t sh*t, but he’s good. I’ll see him when I see him.”
The San Antonio Spurs have benefited from drafting Dylan and adding him to the young contending roster. LeBron initially praised Dylan here when discussing the Spurs in a broader topic about younger teams entering the postseason with high expectations.
Ron created a negative scenario by insulting James and his parenting skills when comparing himself to the all-time great. Both Dylan and Ron Harper Jr. have chased the NBA dream to show that Ron Sr. did a good job helping his sons develop skills at a high level. However, his comment about James felt extremely out of line.
What Ron Harper Actually Said About LeBron
NBA All-Star Weekend featured an exhibition event of Ron and his sons taking part in the Shooting Stars contest. Ron Sr. made his comment about LeBron during one of the interviews hyping up the event during an important weekend for the NBA season.
Harper dropped the following comment about LeBron’s fathering of Bronny:
“I’m not LeBron James. I’m not going to tell my kids what they have to do. I just want to play and enjoy the game and whatever they can get back out the ball game, we will take it. Once upon a time, I told them whatever opportunity that you have, you should have a chance to play in the NBA.”
Both Ron Jr. and Dylan had negative reactions to their father’s comment and showed they didn’t agree with it. Today’s young players have immense respect for LeBron and his accolades. James made sure to leave them out of it when firing back at Ron Sr. all these months later.
Does Ron Harper Have Credibility To Criticize LeBron?
Harper is an underrated player from his prime after contributing to five NBA Championships with the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers. Multiple seasons of 20+ points per game came in the earlier years with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Los Angeles Clippers.
However, no one would ever say Harper was anywhere near what LeBron is today. Harper never made an All-Star team and had to fit into winning situations by sacrificing his general strength of getting a lot of iso scoring plays.
James has joked in the past about players tiers below him not having the right to talk trash. The negative comment from Harper clearly upset LeBron at the time and still sees him wanting to confront Ron today. Most NBA fans will side with James here since Ron’s own sons felt he was out of line in the moment.
