The New York Knicks fan base shocked the NBA world by welcoming back Boston Celtics superstar Jayson Tatum with loud cheers tonight. Tatum played his first game in Madison Square Garden since he tore his Achilles back in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Playoffs last postseason. Knicks fans are known for being loud and abrasive by choice, but they decided to show class with their response to Tatum in the starting lineup.
Loud cheers showed that New York wanted to offer Tatum respect since they last saw him needing help off the court in a heartbreaking injury. Tatum worked extremely hard during the offseason and regular season to get back in time for the closing stretch of the regular season. Boston now has a realistic chance at the NBA Championship thanks to Tatum returning and looking great.
Knicks fans went back to business of booing Tatum and every other Celtics player once the game started. However, they went out of their way to make it clear that Tatum deserves all the respect in the world for his journey back to the court. The New York vs Boston rivalry stopped for a few seconds as Tatum received love from the Knicks basketball community.
Why Knicks Fans Cheered Jayson Tatum
The main reason that Knicks fans cheered Tatum is due to the real-life story of someone coming back to the place where they suffered a painful injury. Tatum had one of the worst moments of his life and arguably the low point of his entire basketball career took place the last time he stepped foot in Madison Square Garden.
Any human being will understand that and offer respect to him. Tatum also won the respect of many NBA fans outside of Boston by pushing himself so hard to return. Jaylen Brown leading the Celtics to a top seed in the East motivated Tatum to get back on the court to give his team a chance to contend.
A combination of the return to the place of his injury and the general work ethic of Tatum made it easier for Knicks fans to cheer their typically hated rival. New York proved that they are more in tune with basketball and chose to celebrate a basketball accomplishment of Tatum’s comeback.
Tatum Will Likely Have To Face Knicks Again
Current seeding sees the Celtics in second place and the Knicks in third for the Eastern Conference. Both teams will likely have to face each other in the second round if both teams advance past their first round series matchups like expected.
New York’s game plan of adding OG Anunoby and Mikal Bridges to defend Tatum and Brown certainly helped last season. An upset victory showed the Knicks having the blueprint to stop the championship favorite Celtics.
Tatum will be needed to have a huge series and deliver consistently great performances. Boston losing Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday in the offseason forced the other players on the roster to step up more. A strong team effort needs all Celtics rotation players contributing this season for ultimate success.
