The Detroit Lions are in full swing of Training Camp as they continue preparations for the upcoming 2026 NFL Season, and multiple players that general manager Brad Holmes brought in as part of his offseason work have made noticeable impacts thus far.
However, one player that is new to the Motor City for the upcoming season has hardly impressed in the early goings of Training Camp. While it’s still relatively early, his performance leaves plenty to be desired, and he’s already running the risk of losing a roster spot.
Detroit Lions Cornerback Roger McCreary Is In Danger Of Losing A Roster Spot
According to Vito Chirco of Sports Illustrated, McCreary has struggled and had a particularly rough day of Camp earlier this week when he was burned by both Tom Kennedy and Malik Cunningham, while committing another costly turnover later to Dominic Lovett.
He wrote:
“As for McCreary, he’s unfortunately struggled mightily in coverage since the beginning of camp. And on Thursday, he had one of his worst days yet. Notably, he got beaten on a hitch route by Tom Kennedy and beaten vertically by Malik Cunningham. Then, later in the day, he coughed up a touchdown to Dominic Lovett in a red-zone drill.
All in all, McCreary – who split time with the Titans and Rams last season – has not looked the part of a capable cover corner thus far in camp. It’s especially concerning for a Lions team which isn’t immensely deep in the secondary and is lacking a clear-cut No. 2 outside corner.”
This is especially concerning, considering that not long ago, Lions Insider John Maakaron wrote that McCreary could represent a “secret weapon” for Detroit this season.
“McCreary has bounced around the league, but if defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard can unlock his full potential, the team will solidy even more a secondary that has struggled with consistency the past couple of seasons,” wrote Maakaron.
Meanwhile, ESPN also listed the signing of McCreary as one of the NFL’s offseason moves that had the potential to pay serious dividends:
“When we look back at the most important offseason move that didn’t get discussed at the time (think linebacker Zack Baun to the Eagles or defensive tackle DeMarcus Lawrence to the Seahawks), we will highlight cornerback Roger McCreary to the Lions. He was traded from a sleepy Titans team to the Rams midseason but then failed to see major action after a hip injury a few weeks later. McCreary has inside/out versatility on a Lions team that needs more reliable coverage players.”<
Roger McCreary Was Signed By The Lions In 2026
McCreary joined the Lions following four seasons split between the Tennessee Titans and Los Angeles Rams. The Auburn product entered the NFL as Tennessee’s second-round selection (35th overall) in the 2022 NFL Draft and has since appeared in 61 games, including 38 starts.
During his career, McCreary has compiled 257 tackles, 22 tackles for loss, 17 passes defended, four sacks and three interceptions, bringing a proven defensive presence to Detroit. However, his performance in Training Camp thus far hasn’t been encouraging, and it’s up to him to change that.
