Kenwood’s second-floor gym has been the center of Chicago high school basketball since COVID. The Broncos assembled the talent and created huge buzz, but a championship eluded them for years.
That changed on Saturday. No. 1 Kenwood withstood a major challenge from No. 19 Curie in the city title game and did not fold.
TJ Seals, Aleks Alston and Amari Edwards, the Broncos’ seniors, led the charge and star sophomore Devin Cleveland drained two free throws with nine seconds left to seal a 67-65 win at UIC’s Credit Union 1 Arena.
“This feels amazing,” Alston said. “It just makes me more hungry for state. We aren’t finished yet.”
It’s the first city title for Kenwood. The Broncos lost in the city championship game the past two seasons. Curie beat them last year. The Condors also won the city title in 2019 and 2014.
“This means the world to Kenwood,” Alston said. “This is everything. All those doubters, what are they going to say now? We won it. They can’t say anything. We won.”
Senior TJ Seals, who transferred from Johnson over the summer, led the Broncos with 22 points, eight rebounds and six assists. Seals acclimated quicker than anyone anticipated to big-time Public League basketball. His toughness in the post and all-around athleticism helped push the Broncos over the top this season.
Alston finished with 15 points, six rebounds and two blocks. Cleveland added 16 points.
“It was time to win,” Cleveland said. “I had to do it for Aleks and the older guys. I needed to get them one. It feels even better than I thought it would.”
Curie led 43-40 after three quarters. Cleveland was in and out with foul trouble throughout the first three quarters and Kenwood could not establish a rhythm on offense. Briefly, it looked like the letdown game the Broncos held off all season had arrived.
But Kenwood (27-1) opened the fourth quarter with a three by Edwards and bucket from Seals to retake the lead 45-43. The Broncos held a four-point lead for most of the fourth quarter but Curie (21-9) charged back behind senior Justin Oliver.
Oliver, who finished with 22 points and eight assists, scored 12 in the fourth and his two free throws pulled the Condors within 65-63 with 13 seconds left. But that was as close as it would get.
“I’m so proud of this team,” Curie coach Mike Oliver said. “They improved all season and gave a tremendous effort tonight.”
Senior Brad Johnson scored 14 for Curie and Jahkil Jackson added 13 points. Kenwood out-rebounded the Condors 27-21 and assisted on 14 of 22 field goals.
Kenwood and Curie could meet again in the Class 4A Hinsdale Central Sectional final.
