The first day of Alabama fall camp always comes with plenty of excitement, but one of the biggest storylines entering the 2026 season revolves around the Crimson Tide’s rebuilt offensive line.
Following Wednesday’s opening practice, Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer offered perhaps his most encouraging comments yet about the group, suggesting the unit has already taken meaningful steps forward since spring practice despite replacing nearly an entire starting lineup.
While it’s still far too early to draw major conclusions without pads, DeBoer’s early assessment should leave Alabama fans optimistic about where the offensive line is headed.
Kalen DeBoer Sees Noticeable Progress Up Front
Alabama returns just one player with starting experience in the program, sophomore Michael Carroll, forcing DeBoer and offensive line coach Adrian Klemm to rebuild the unit with a mix of transfers and young talent.
Even so, DeBoer believes the chemistry and communication among the group has improved dramatically over the summer.
“I thought it looked a lot better and cleaner than what it did at the end of spring,” DeBoer said. “Again, we don’t have pads on, so it’s really hard to tell. But I thought that from responsibilities and just, again, there’s got to be a trust that exists.”
Rather than focusing solely on physical ability, DeBoer emphasized the importance of offensive linemen understanding how to work together within the scheme.
He pointed to proper footwork, double-team execution, and knowing where help is coming from as signs the group has been intentional throughout the offseason.
Those are encouraging comments considering Alabama added 11 new offensive linemen through the transfer portal and high school recruiting during the offseason.
William Sanders Brings Valuable Experience Back
One player DeBoer was especially happy to have back on the field was junior William Sanders.
The Brookwood native missed spring practice while recovering from a lower-back injury, but now returns as one of the few linemen who already understands Alabama’s offensive system.
“It’s good having him back,” DeBoer said. “There’s very few guys on the offensive line in particular that have snaps in our program, and he’s one of them.”
While Sanders remains one of the leading contenders at left guard, DeBoer suggested his biggest value may simply be providing continuity in a room filled with newcomers.
Right Tackle Battle Continues
Perhaps the most intriguing competition remains at right tackle.
With Michael Carroll sliding inside to right guard, transfers Jayvin James and Nick Brooks appear to be leading the battle for the vacant spot.
Rather than naming a frontrunner, DeBoer praised both players for the strides they’ve made since arriving in Tuscaloosa.
“I think both of them had great summers,” DeBoer said. “There was definitely them coming back now knowing what it feels like, what the expectations are.”
Because Wednesday’s practice was conducted without pads, DeBoer stopped short of evaluating who may have the edge, saying he’s eager to study the film before making any judgments.
That competition will likely remain one of Alabama’s most closely watched position battles throughout August.
Alabama’s Offensive Line Still Has Questions, But Confidence Is Growing
While Alabama still has plenty to prove before the season opener, DeBoer’s comments suggest the Crimson Tide is ahead of where it finished spring practice.
The starting lineup isn’t fully settled, especially at left guard and right tackle, but the communication, trust, and understanding within the offense appear to be developing quickly.
For a team expected to lean on a first-year starting quarterback and several new faces across the offense, that’s exactly the kind of progress Alabama hoped to hear after Day 1 of fall camp.
If that growth continues once the pads come on, the offensive line could quietly become one of the Crimson Tide’s biggest success stories entering the 2026 season.
