Josh Allen Injury Update: Bills QB Evaluated After Hit Against Jaguars

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen was evaluated for an injury early in the team’s wild-card game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Allen was hit hard during a third-down run in the first quarter and taken into the medical tent to be evaluated for a concussion. The Bills kicked a field goal on the drive to take a 3-0 lead.

The Bills quarterback had been playing with an injured foot for the final three weeks of the regular season, leading to an early exit in the season finale win over the New York Jets.

Josh Allen in the Clear

After being led into the blue tent to be evaluated after the team’s scoring drive, Allen was seen returning to the sidelines and grabbing a tablet, apparently prepared to re-enter the game.

“He went into the medical tent and was looked at by the medical neurologist,” said Tracy Wolfson. “He was cleared to play.”

Allen played just one snap in the season finale, maintaining his league-best streak of consecutive starts for quarterbacks before giving way to backup Mitch Trubisky. The Bills went on to win 35-8, with Trubisky throwing four touchdown passes.

Allen was briefly knocked out of a game earlier this season, but has not missed a game due to injury since his rookie season in 2018.

The Bills are shorthanded on offense, losing third-down running back Ty Johnson to an ankle injury. The Bills elevated practice-squad back Frank Gore Jr. for the game, his first action in an NFL game since he joined the team as an undrafted free agent last year.

The Bills also had some losses on defense, with linebacker Terrel Bernard and rookie cornerback Maxwell Hairston ruled out. The team was able to get a return from kicker Matt Prater, who missed a pair of games during the regular season and was hurt in the season finale. The Bills signed free agent kicker Matthew Wright to the practice squad, but he was not elevated for the game.

Josh Allen’s Harsh Self-Evaluation

Allen said he did some deep evaluation before facing Jacksonville’s aggressive defense. Offensive coordinator Joe Brady challenged Allen to go over his own game tape and evaluate his play, with Allen saying the results were eye-opening.

“You’re sitting there like, ‘God I stink.’ It’s like, ‘What am I thinking here? What am I doing?” Allen said. “There’s so much out there that I’ve missed. Whether it’s getting a little lazy with my feet and not taking a check down and maybe instead trying to force something downfield. Or throwing the ball away and not take sacks and allowing us to be in field-goal range. There’s still so much room to improve.”

Allen added that while the Jaguars have a strong defense, there are no easy opponents left in the postseason field.

“Every team that we’re playing here on out is a good team, and it’s no different this week,” Allen said. “I have this extra emphasis on points are at a premium in the playoffs, and just trying to do everything I can to give us points.”
