Legendary singer Johnny Mathis is retiring from the road and live performances as he approaches his 90th birthday.
Mathis’ Facebook page announced on Wednesday that due to his age and “memory issues which have accelerated,” the singer is canceling all tour dates beyond his May 18 concert in Englewood, New Jersey.
Born in Texas, Mathis’ career spans nearly 70 years, and boasts more than 73 Billboard-charting albums. He was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame three times and received a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003. His greatest hits include “Chances Are,” “It’s Not For Me To Say,” “Wonderful! Wonderful!” and “Misty,” the Erroll Garner and Johnny Burke-penned classic. His 1958 holiday album, “Merry Christmas” has sold over 5 million copies, making it one of the most popular and successful Christmas albums of all time.
Refunds for all canceled shows will be made via original point of purchase, according to the Facebook post, which went on to thank his fans worldwide for their “continued love & support of his music.”
Mathis was a frequent performer at the Rosemont Theatre, having last performed his holiday show at the venue in 2023.
