Jefferson County men tied up, tortured housemate for 14 hours, police say

Three Jefferson County men charged with first-degree attempted murder allegedly tied up their housemate and tortured him for 14 hours by beating him with a pry bar and baseball bat and lighting him on fire, according to an arrest affidavit.

Jason Edward Carlson, 49; Sherell Cortez Allen, 48; and Luke Leonard Anaya, 41, each face 17 charges related to the Sept. 16 incident, including attempted murder, assault, kidnapping, false imprisonment and felony menacing, court records show.

Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies responded to St. Anthony Hospital the morning of Sept. 16 after hospital staff called 911 about a patient who reported he was tied up and tortured.

Deputies spoke to the 45-year-old man, who said he had lived in the house in the 4700 block of South Oak Court for a few weeks.

The man was in a basement bedroom around 2 a.m. on Sept. 15 when he heard Carlson, Allen and Anaya talking about beating him up, according to the affidavit.

The man tried to crawl out of the window but could not and instead tried to barricade the door.

Carlson, Allen and Anaya broke down the door, shot him with rock salt loaded into “Airsoft-type firearms” and began assaulting him, including stepping on his neck hard enough that he passed out, the man told deputies.

When the man regained consciousness, he was bound to a chair with zip ties and electrical tape. The three men then assaulted and tortured him for 14 hours, including beating his head and knees with a pry bar and baseball bat and pouring rubbing alcohol on his face and lighting it on fire.

The man was able to escape when two other people came home and told Carlson, Allen and Anaya to stop. The pair took the man away from the house, and a third person then took the man to the emergency room and dropped him off.
