Insider Updates Aaron Rodgers’ Timeline for Potential Steelers Return

The Pittsburgh Steelers are nearing a resolution on the annual Aaron Rodgers will-he, won’t-he saga, according to longtime NFL insider Jason La Canfora.

La Canfora detailed Pittsburgh’s ongoing waiting game but reported a new wrinkle that the Las Vegas Raiders may also be in the market for Rodgers’ services, and that a resolution should be coming “in the next few weeks.”

Rodgers, 42, is poised to enter his 22nd NFL season and 19th as a starting quarterback. Last season with the Steelers, he had a career-low 3,322 passing yards for any season he started double-digit games but did have 24 touchdowns and seven interceptions while helping them go 10-7 and win the AFC North before they fell to the Houston Texans in the AFC Wild Card Round.

The Steelers Continue to Wait for Aaron Rodgers

The Steelers missed out on Malik Willis and Kyler Murray, and Kirk Cousins surely won’t wait around forever for Rodgers to determine his future before the former Washington Commanders, Minnesota Vikings and Atlanta Falcons QB decides his.

But the Steelers are still waiting to determine whether Rodgers wants to play in 2026 or call it a career.

“The Steelers are giving Aaron Rodgers time and space to sort out his future, according to league sources, as he once again mulls retirement,” La Canfora wrote for Sports Boom on Tuesday. “While there is no direct timeline in place between the veteran quarterback and the reigning AFC North champs, there is a strong expectation in league circles that closure comes in the new few weeks.”

Rodgers did not officially sign in Pittsburgh until June 5, 2025, so any news sooner than that would be welcome to Steelers brass — especially with the Steel City set to host next month’s NFL Draft. But with Mike McCarthy, with whom Rodgers won Super Bowl XLV for the Green Bay Packers against the Steelers, set as Pittsburgh coach, the duo could team up for one more ride.

“The Steelers have few other viable options,” La Canfora wrote, “and he is a fit in their locker room and thrived previously under new coach Mike McCarthy.”

The Raiders Have Entered the Chat With Aaron Rodgers

Last year Rodgers flirted with the Vikings, but this year a new team may be entering the Rodgers sweepstakes.

“He either goes back to Pittsburgh, or maybe he tries to get something done with Tom Brady (in Las Vegas), or he hangs it up,” La Canfora quoted an executive from one NFL team who has been looking at potential backup quarterbacks. “He wants to be a starter. It’s down to those two teams… and that’s if the Raiders really him. It’s Pittsburgh or nothing, how I see it.”

It’s plausible Rodgers’ camp is bringing the Raiders into the conversation to try and drum up a better offer from the Steelers. Las Vegas has the No. 1 overall pick, which it will almost certainly use on Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza, who is likely to start Day 1 under new head coach Klint Kubiak.

Whatever happens, Steelers fans can take solace in the fact it will be resolved soon.

“If one were to bet on how this scenario works out, the safe money is probably on a Rodgers reunion in Pittsburgh (according to agents and NFL execs),” La Canfora wrote, “though it definitely is not going to linger for nearly as long as this situation did a year ago.”
