Insider Addresses Breece Hall Jets Tag-and-Trade Rumors Ahead of NFL Draft

It doesn’t sound like a tag-and-trade is on the horizon for New York Jets running back Breece Hall.

NFL Insider Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated was asked in a mailbag column if the Jets would consider pulling the trigger on such a move this offseason.

“I’d be surprised, Paul. I just don’t think you can get the sort of value for a running back on a franchise tag that would make it worth everyone’s while to lose another of your best players. My sense is they’ll make a real run at extending him. And maybe if those talks don’t go well, and the team’s struggling in midseason, you look at dealing him at the deadline,” Breer wrote.

The Most Interested Team Is out of the Sweepstakes

Ahead of last year’s NFL trade deadline, the Jets came close to dealing Hall.

According to NFL Insider Connor Hughes of SNY, the Jets were in serious trade talks with the Kansas City Chiefs. However, they hit a stalemate. New York wanted a third-rounder. Kansas City only wanted to give up a fourth-rounder.

The trade deadline came and went with no deal. In theory, it made sense for both sides to potentially revisit those discussions this offseason. Those talks are now dead.

Kansas City made a massive splash in free agency, signing former Seattle Seahawks running back Kenneth Walker III. He inked a three-year, $43.05 million deal that included $28.7 million in total guarantees.

That seismic move removed Kansas City from any potential Hall trade talks this offseason.

Jets Legitimately Want to Keep Hall Long-Term

Despite the outside noise about potential tag-and-trade scenarios, the Jets want to keep Hall long-term.

“Things are in a good place. I’m hopeful with Breece. Obviously, we will get through this draft process, and after the draft, I’ll shift my focus back there and hopefully get something done with Breece,” general manager Darren Mougey explained at the Annual League Meetings.

“The Jets seem optimistic that something will get done ahead of the July 15 deadline — after that point, Hall either would have to play on the tag or hold out,” Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic wrote.

Head coach Aaron Glenn confirmed at the Annual League Meetings that they talked to Hall before placing the franchise tag on him.

“Listen, and you guys know, I’m a huge fan of Breece. I think Breece is a top running back in this league. I will say this, once we get through with the draft, I’m sure that is going to be revisited. Moug [Darren Mougey] already said that. We will see exactly how that goes. Breece knows where I stand. He doesn’t need a lecture from me on how this goes. Man, we talked at exit [meetings], we talked before he got tagged, and he knows exactly where he stands with me,” Glenn explained.

On April 26, the 2026 NFL draft will be over. That gives the Jets two and a half months to work out a long-term deal with Hall ahead of the July 15 deadline.

If they’re unable to strike a deal, Hall won’t be able to sign an extension until next offseason. That includes the Jets and any other team that he would get traded to after that deadline.

That means Hall will be left with two choices: playing out the tag or holding out.
