The Walnut Creek City Council at its Dec. 3 meeting adopted a resolution certifying the results of November’s election. The Contra Costa County Clerk-Recorder’s Office certified the results earlier that day.

The council customarily votes for a mayor and mayor pro-tem at its first December meeting each year and unanimously chose Cindy Darling to serve as mayor for the next 12 months. She took over the gavel once selected, having been reelected Nov. 5 to her second council term.
“It will be my honor to represent the city of Walnut Creek as mayor for the coming year,” said Darling. “There are many layers of government that represent us all, from local to state to federal. Cities are the government closest to the ground, and we will continue to find ways big and small to improve the lives of Walnut Creek residents.”
The City Council voted for Councilmember Kevin Wilk to serve as mayor pro-tem. Wilk was aldo reelected Nov. 5 to another council term, his third. Darling, Wilk and newly elected Councilmember Craig DeVinney were sworn in at the meeting.
Several community members and county, state and federal elected officials honored departing Mayor Loella Haskew, who earlier in the year announced her decision to retire from the council. Haskew shared her thoughts about serving on the council since first been elected in 2012 and serving as mayor three separate times.
She led the council during some challenging times, including the COVID-19 pandemic. Haskew had an extensive history of community service before joining the council and will no doubt continue to have an impact in Walnut Creek.

PITTSBURG
West Leland multipurpose field to be built near Johnson Parkway
Pittsburg Premier Fields (Project 3080) will construct a multipurpose field with parking, landscaping and a traffic signal on West Leland Road and also walking trails near the intersection of John Henry Johnson Parkway.
The first phase of the project includes installation of the field, which will have trails circling the facility that connect to existing trails, corner traffic signal control improvements and a parking lot that includes lights, landscaping, water quality features, site furnishing, tree plantings and more.

Council announces various board, commission openings
At its Dec. 3 meeting, the Concord City Council announced recruitments for four-year terms ending Feb. 28, 2029, on various city boards and commissions listed below. Applications are due to the City Clerk by 5 p.m. Jan. 10.
The Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee seeks three individuals. The Concord Pavilion Community Outreach Committee needs individuals to fill two openings. The Design Review Board seeks two design professionals, the Planning Commission needs three individuals to serve on its panel.

Diablo Women’s Chorale to present ‘Feelin’ Good!!’ concert
The Diablo Women’s Chorale (DWC) will present their fall-winter 2024 concert, “Feelin’ Good!!”, a festive program filled with jazzy, cool and seasonal music including songs from Nina Simone, the Spice Girls, Elton John and many more at 7 p.m. Dec. 13 and 3 p.m. Dec. 15 in the Lafayette Orinda Presbyterian Church at 49 Knox Drive in Lafayette.
Performed with live musicians, including a brass ensemble, their program showcases vibrant and uplifting harmonies celebrating happiness and the beauty of life’s simple pleasures. Founded during World War II, the DWC has been a musical legacy in the East Bay since 1942.

MORAGA
Campolindo High hosts East Bay Sea Serpents at swim meet
Madison and Morgan Blackwell, both 18, have been volunteer coaches for the East Bay Sea Serpents, a local swim team led by Brian Wentzel, who has been affiliated for many years with the Special Olympics of Northern California.
They are now in college but have continued to organize an annual event that includes the Sea Serpents in a Nov. 10 club meet hosted by Orinda Aquatics in the Soda Center at Moraga’s Campolindo High School.
The Sea Serpent athletes raced alongside the Orinda Aquatics swimmers and were inspirational to everyone. Many of the athletes posted best times and competed in new events. For some, the competition was their first and they were delighted to just participate. The joy on their faces served to remind everyone of the many physical and mental health benefits of swimming.
