How our story and photos helped a woman find a kidney donor

What makes this photo important?
This photo means so much to me, and is a great example of the importance of local news. Christine let us into her home and allowed us to share her story about a search for a kidney donor, which was reported by Elvia Malagón. One of our readers was so moved by the story that she decided to donate a kidney to Christine. To be able to be a part of that story means the world to me.
How did you get the shot?
I took a number of portraits ahead of the interview, and while I thought they turned out fine, I was really drawn to how comfortable Christine was in her home as she was interviewed by Elvia. It was a rainy day and the clouds diffused the light coming through the windows. The window behind Christine helped me create a frame for her face to highlight her features in the dimly lit room. Christine answered Elvia’s questions as I moved around her couch, which took up most of the space in that room, finding the angle I was looking for.
