Hayward man found guilty of murder in 2022 stabbing deaths of father and son

DUBLIN – A 24-year-old Hayward man is facing 32 years to life in state prison for stabbing a father and son to death at a birthday party in 2022, according to prosecutors.

A jury convicted Oscar Josue Arevalo-Baquiax of second-degree murder for the deaths of 49-year-old Rigoberto Perez Sr. and 22-year-old Rigoberto Perez Jr., both of Hayward, the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office announced Thursday.

On Sept. 24, 2022, Arevalo-Baquiax and a female friend attended a birthday party at the victims’ apartment in the 100 block of Lund Avenue. At one point, Arevalo-Baquiax and Perez Jr. got into a heated argument about the friend, prosecutors said, and Arevalo-Baquiax and his friend were asked to leave.

Arevalo-Baquiax believed Perez Jr. had disrespected his friend by touching her, according to a police report.

Prosecutors said the incident also prompted a physical fight between Perez Sr. and Perez Jr.

Fifteen to 30 minutes after leaving the birthday party, Arevalo-Baquiax re-entered the apartment, grabbed a knife from the kitchen and stabbed the father and son, who were still fighting, according to prosecutors. They were pronounced dead at the scene.

Arevalo-Baquiax – his hands covered in blood – told his friend he had just stabbed both men, prosecutors said.

Arevalo-Baquiax is scheduled to be sentenced on April 24 at the East County Hall of Justice in Dublin.
