OAKLAND — A Hayward man was charged with killing a pedestrian, wounding a Chihuahua, and evading police in a suspected drunk driving crash last year, records show.
Christian Garcia, 27, was charged with vehicular manslaughter, evading a peace officer, leaving the scene of an accident, cruelly wounding an animal and felony drunk driving, according to court records. A passenger in his car, Joshua Quintero, 20, was charged with a misdemeanor for briefly attempting to run from police, authorities said.
Garcia was charged with killing 39-year-old Brien Anthony Yungling, a pedestrian who was struck by Garcia’s red Hyundai on Dec. 7, according to police. The crash occurred near Hesperian and Lewelling boulevards in the unincorporated Alameda County community of Ashland.
Authorities say Garcia was also injured in the collision and was transported to the hospital, where investigators noted his “strong” smell of alcohol, police said in court records. He remains in jail with bail set at $425,000, and a pretrial hearing scheduled for April 2.
Garcia has pleaded not guilty. The jail lists “jewelry salesman” as his profession.
