The game of golf is back at Jack’s place this week. The Memorial tournament serves as a test that prepares golfers for the gruelling test of the U.S. Open.
Jack Nicklaus, 86, retired from an active role on the scene years ago. But he still wishes to be impactful for the players.
“I hope that I can be of some influence,” Nicklaus revealed to the press. “I’m too old to worry about trying to create new stuff.”
He cares a lot about the players. The 18-time major winner revealed he deliberately gave up profit when building Muirfield Village. He designed it in such a way that not a dime goes into his pocket and the players coming get to practice their best game before the third major.
“I structured Muirfield so that I couldn’t make any money. And I did that on purpose,” Nicklaus said. “I didn’t want my fellow competitors saying, ‘Jack’s just profiting’”
“I try to do what I would have liked as a player. The way I would like to be treated, that’s what we do here.”
On that premise, Nicklaus announced that he is going to have a sit-down with the CEO of the PGA Tour to talk about certain changes that he is not happy with in the current scene.
“I want to sit down with Brian(Rolapp) and Jay(Haas) and have that conversation,” he said. “I hate to see tournaments bunched too much together. That’s a problem for the TOUR in the future.”
Jack Nicklaus Reveals Support and Advice to Rory McIlroy
GettyJack Nicklaus shakes hands with Rory McIlroy on the 18th green during the final round of the Memorial Tournament presented by Workday at Muirfield Village Golf Club.
Rory McIlroy matched Tiger Woods and Nicklaus in winning the masters back-to-back this year. When Nicklaus was asked his views about the fact, he revealed that McIlroy has always been his favourite.
Nicklaus further said that the 37-year-old had a sit-down with him before the 2025 Masters to take his advice.
“We sat down two years ago, Rory went through shot for shot,” he revealed. “I said, ‘I wouldn’t change a thing.’”
Before McIlroy’s recent win, Nicklaus kept it short when they met on the range.
“I put my hands on his shoulders and said, ‘No effing double bogeys.’”
Jack Nicklaus Reveals He Once Caught A 1358-Pound Marlin

Nicklaus is an avid, lifelong angler and outdoorsman. Introduced to fly fishing in college by his Ohio State golf coach, he has famously used fishing to fill the competitive void left by golf.
“It was the Great Barrier Reef,” he said. “We were fishing up there before the Australian Open. Next to last day, I got onto a big fish. It took six hours and 25 minutes to catch the fish. Largest black marlin by measurement that’s ever been caught.”
“I took it and put it in the living room of our house. And Barbara immediately put a red flag on the pectoral fin because it was right about neck high.”
