A 12-year-old girl has died after she was playing with her mother’s gun and it discharged Sunday evening in South Shore.
Priscilla McCullough’s mother told responding police officers that Priscilla was in a bathroom playing with a gun when it fired, hitting her in the abdomen around 6:50 p.m. in the 7100 block of South Constance Avenue, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office and a police report.
Priscilla’s 11-year-old sister was in the kitchen eating when she went to check on Priscilla and found her on the floor, shot, the report said.
The 11-year-old brought the gun to her mother, who was bathing her 1-year-old in another bathroom, and asked “is this real?” of the gun, the report said. The 42-year-old mother applied pressure to Priscilla’s wound and told her 11-year-old to call 911.
Priscilla was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital initially in critical condition, but was pronounced dead at 7:24 p.m., according to the medical examiner’s office.
The gun, which belongs to the mother, was recovered was recovered at the scene. The mother told officers it is usually kept in a locked safe in a bedroom.
Area 1 detectives were investigating.
