Giants’ Willy Adames Mistake Sparks Bigger Concern

The San Francisco Giants did not just lose another game to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday night. They exposed the type of mental breakdown that can quickly define a collapsing season.

Because Willy Adames made a mistake that simply cannot happen from a veteran star being paid to stabilize the franchise.

And he knew it immediately.

Following the Giants’ 4-0 loss in Los Angeles, Adames openly admitted feeling “ashamed” after getting doubled off second base during a disastrous seventh inning sequence that completely killed one of San Francisco’s few scoring opportunities.

“That mistake is probably the most ashamed that I would feel playing the game,” Adames said afterward, according to the California Post’s Evan Webeck. “I know that can’t happen. It was my fault. That’s on me.”

The play itself looked shocking in real time.

Adames took off on a deep fly ball from Drew Gilbert believing it would split the outfield gap for extra bases. Instead, Dodgers center fielder Andy Pages made the catch near the warning track while Adames continued running without tagging up despite there being only one out.

By the time the ball reached second base, the inning was already over.

That moment instantly became the defining image of another frustrating Giants loss.

Giants Continue Making Costly Fundamental Mistakes

This is why the situation feels larger than one embarrassing play.

The Giants are no longer losing only because of roster limitations or offensive inconsistency. They are repeatedly hurting themselves with avoidable mistakes that good teams typically eliminate early in the season.

Adames later admitted he forgot the number of outs during the inning. According to Webeck, the shortstop had been talking with Dodgers star Mookie Betts throughout the at-bat and even turned away from home plate at times while Shohei Ohtani was pitching.

Still, Adames refused to use that as an excuse.

“I do that every time,” Adames explained. “If it was because of that, I’d make mistakes every two days.”

The honesty mattered. So did the accountability.

But accountability alone does not erase growing concerns surrounding this Giants team.

San Francisco entered Thursday tied among the league leaders in outs made on the bases while also ranking near the bottom of Major League Baseball in overall base-running value. Those numbers reflect a team struggling with focus, execution, and situational baseball.

That becomes especially damaging when the offense already has little margin for error.

Pressure Around Giants Is Growing Fast

The timing also makes the mistake feel worse.

Adames had finally started pulling himself out of a brutal slump after hearing boos from Giants fans earlier this month. He raised his batting average from .197 at the end of April to .222 following several multi-hit performances entering the Dodgers series.

Now the conversation surrounding him has completely changed again.

Manager Tony Vitello attempted to calm the situation afterward by saying the Giants simply need to improve their base-running as a whole. But frustration is clearly building around a team sitting at 18-25 and falling further behind in the National League race.

That is what makes this moment important moving forward.

One mental mistake does not ruin a season. But repeated lapses like this often become symptoms of something much bigger inside struggling organizations.

And right now, the Giants are starting to look like a team searching for answers everywhere.
