Giants GM Joe Schoen Reveals Big Change for Josh Ezeudu Ahead of Draft

The New York Giants re-signed Josh Ezeudu last month and may even get an opportunity to get back to the position he is most known for.

Giants general manager Joe Schoen said that Ezeudu is going to get a chance to play guard ahead of the 2026 season, even though the organization is still trying to upgrade the offensive line.

Ezeudu was a third-round selection of the Giants in the 2022 NFL Draft and came into the league as a guard. But he has been a versatile member of the Giants’ O-line throughout his four seasons, playing 33 games at guard and tackle.

Joe Schoen: Josh Ezeudu Will Get a Chance at Guard

The Ezeudu news may be oddly timed, since the Giants also signed free agent guard Daniel Faalele, a player new coach John Harbaugh knows well from his time with the Baltimore Ravens.

Still, Schoen isn’t done being aggressive.

“We’re always going to be looking to upgrade the O-line, D-line, every position really. We brought some guys in earlier this week, and we’ll continue to do so,” Schoen said. “We’ve got placeholders in there, guys that have done it and will compete. Ezeudu will get an opportunity inside at guard.”

Who is first on the depth chart in April matters far less than in August or October, and Schoen detailed the competition the Giants have on their hands at guard.

“[Faalele] has started multiple games for the Ravens over the last couple years,” Schoen said. Evan (Neal) has started games, (Aaron) Stinnie has started games.

“We will also continue to look outside the building as well as the draft coming up.”

Joe Schoen is Trying to Remain Flexible With the No. 5 Pick

Despite their offseason spending, and promising 2025 campaign that featured breakout performances from quarterback Jaxson Dart, Cam Skattebo and others, the Giants still have a lot of needs.

So Joe Schoen is going into next weekend’s draft trying to remain flexible, especially with the Giants’ first selection, in what looks like a strange year at the top of the draft.

“Maybe it’s not the surplus position or the higher paying positions when you get into free agency, or outside the building maybe the best players in this draft,” Schoen said. “You would like to have those positions outside the building that you’re going to pay a lot of money to get that surplus value. But it just may not be the case this year, which is fine.

“We’re going to evaluate every position, every player, and obviously do what’s best for us.”

The Giants have seven picks to make themselves better — or fewer if they decide to trade up for a player they prefer. He explained why he’d prefer to stockpile picks rather than making trades.

“The more swings, the better chances of hitting,” Schoen said. “It also allows you to build depth at different parts of the draft. You’d like for them all to become starters, but there are certain parts of the draft where you’re looking for either special teams or depth pieces if somebody gets injured.”
