A gas leak at an Indiana BP refinery released odors into parts of the Chicago area Thursday morning.
The City of Whiting was informed by BP of a leak from one of their underground small supply lines near the refinery, city officials said on Facebook.
The leak was found and isolated as cleaning crews worked on-site and additional air monitoring has been set up as a precautionary measure, according to the city.
BP is monitoring air emissions for elevated levels of contaminants that could pose a risk to public health, but no elevated readings have been detected as of about 11:30 a.m, officials said.
The Whiting refinery is BP’s largest, according to the company’s website. About 440,000 barrels of oil are processed a day.
