Fremont records its first fatal traffic collision of the year

FREMONT – A 73-year-old Fremont man died Sunday from injuries he suffered in a solo bicycle crash earlier this month in the city, police said.

The collision happened around 4:05 p.m. Feb. 16 at the intersection of Fremont Boulevard and London Common, the Fremont Police Department said in a news release.

The man received medical aid at the scene and was taken to an area hospital, where he later died, police said.

The death marked Fremont’s first fatal traffic crash of the year.

An investigation revealed the man was riding southbound in the bicycle lane of Fremont Boulevard when he hit a curb at London Common and was thrown to the ground, police said. The man, who was wearing a helmet, suffered head and facial injuries.

The cause of the collision is still under investigation. Police have not determined if alcohol or drugs played a role.
