Four stabbed, one struck by car, in wild Bethel Island barroom brawl

BETHEL ISLAND — A 41-year-old man was arraigned this month on five felony counts of assault, stemming from his alleged role in a wild, violent night at the Rusty Porthole, where four people, including the suspect, suffered stab wounds.

The charges stem from a “large fight” that broke out at the bar, located at 3895 Willow Road, at around 10:15 p.m. on Aug. 27. When Contra Costa Sheriff’s deputies responded they found two victims with “major injuries” and two others with stab wounds that were less serious. A fifth victim had been struck by a vehicle as it sped out of the parking lot, authorities said.

As it turned out, one of the suspects had started a tab, which led police to an Oakley residence on Brazil Court. On the morning of Aug. 28, they saw both suspects leaving the home and stopped them for questioning. One had a cut above his eye and dried blood on his pants, which the other had no obvious signs of being in a physical altercation, authorities said.

Both men were arrested, but only the 41-year-old man has been charged in connection with the incident. Both suspects refused to speak to police, with one requesting an attorney and the other simply explaining that he would prefer not to incriminate himself, authorities said in court records.

Police have not revealed the motive behind the brawl. The 41-year-old man has pleaded not guilty and is next due in court on Oct. 12, records show.
