Former Outfielder Jason Heyward Announces Return to Dodgers in New Role

The Los Angeles Dodgers have gone 5-5 in their past 10 games, which has resulted in them losing control of the National League West division for the time being. It’s still very early in the season, though, and until the Dodgers get sent home for the offseason, they are going to be the favorite to win the 2026 World Series.

Much has been made about Los Angeles’ offseason moves, which have already had a major impact on its team this year. Even with the season underway, the Dodgers’ front office is always looking for ways to improve, and sometimes, that involves adding new faces to their department. Earlier this week, the team saw one of its former players, outfielder Jason Heyward, join the front office in a unique new role.

Dodgers Hire Jason Heyward to Work as Special Assistant

Heyward was selected by the Atlanta Braves with the No. 14 overall pick in the 2007 MLB Draft, and he quickly rose through the minors, as he made the major league team in 2010. As a rookie, Heyward quickly put together an All-Star campaign (.277 BA, 18 HR, 72 RBI, 11 SB, .849 OPS), but that ended up being the only All-Star selection of his career.

After spending the first five years of his career with Atlanta, Heyward bounced around the league a bit. He spent one year with the St. Louis Cardinals before latching on with the Chicago Cubs for seven seasons. In 2023, Heyward found his way to the Dodgers, which is where he spent one-and-a-half seasons before he got released late in August ahead of L.A.’s title run in 2024.

While his time with Los Angeles was relatively brief, Heyward made quite an impact on the franchise. Shortly after he retired earlier this season, Heyward made it clear to several of his former clubs that he was looking for a front office role in the league. The Dodgers obliged, as they recently hired him to work as a special assistant in their front office.

“Recently retired five-time Gold Glove outfielder Jason Heyward is joining the Dodgers’ front office as a special assistant,” Maddie Lee of The Los Angeles Times reported.

Heyward has obviously never worked in a front office before, but having spent 16 years in the big leagues, he’s certainly gotten a firsthand look at how these franchises operate on the business side of the game. There will certainly be a learning curve for him, but the Dodgers will likely start Heyward with some small tasks before gradually increasing his responsibilities.

On the field, Los Angeles is looking to find a way to get past the San Diego Padres at the top of its division. Getting healthy would certainly help, as guys like Blake Snell and Mookie Betts have recently found their way off the injured list. After snapping a four-game losing streak with a 4-0 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday, the Dodgers will look to pick up the series win in the rubber match on Thursday night.
