Former Dolphins Pro Bowl Receiver Shares True Feelings After Being Traded

This offseason, the Miami Dolphins have undergone a roster purge. The team released Pro Bowl players Tyreek Hill, Bradley Chubb, Alec Ingold and Jason Sanders. Meanwhile, the team traded Pro Bowl-caliber players Minkah Fitzpatrick and Jaylen Waddle.

Many fans and media members have pointed out that this is not the first time the Dolphins have undergone a rebuild like this. One executive around the NFL even told The Athletic’s Mike Sando, “To me, this is 2019 all over again.” Before the 2019 season, the Miami Dolphins had fired most of the 2018 staff and either traded or released a majority of the primary contributors from the 2018 season.

Similar to the 2025 season, where losing Pro Bowl wide receiver Tyreek Hill for the season led Miami to their worst season since 2019, the 2018 Dolphins were without Pro Bowl receiver Jarvis Landry as the team traded him to the Cleveland Browns prior to the season. Now, years later, the former Dolphins receiver shared his true feelings on the trade and what went down between the organization and himself.

Former Miami Dolphins Wide Receiver Shares Thoughts on Trade

Former Miami Dolphins wide receiver Jarvis Landry, who previously expressed his desire to return to the team in 2026, went on “Deebo & Joe Podcast”, and shared his thoughts after being traded to the Browns prior to the 2018 season.

Landry said:

“When I got to my contract year, I had a decision to hold out or to go to training camp. I said ‘You know what? Imma show up. Imma be a team guy. Imma go to training camp, go do everything, show them that I’m a Dolphin. I want to say here, I want to be here.’ And that season ended, man.

‘We got $11 million for you.’ Top guy at that time getting paid $15 million…Julio Jones, Odell (Beckham Jr.) had just got paid. We had a guy on our team, Kenny Stills. Kenny Stills was making about $11 million a year. No way y’all see us the same.

Next thing you know, I’m about to go toTennessee or I’m about to go Baltimore. Cleveland was never in the picture. My coach at the time (Adam Gase), it was his thing in team meetings where he’d say ‘if somebody don’t want to play for the Miami Dolphins, I’ll send your ass to Cleveland.’…Essentially, send you to Cleveland so your career could die. They called me, said ‘you’re going to Cleveland’.”

Repercussions of Landry’s Trade

The Dolphins traded Landry despite the receiver agreeing to sign the franchise tag Miami had placed in exchange for a fourth-round pick, which Miami then used to select tight end Durham Smythe.

In order to replace Landry’s production, the Dolphins signed free agent wide receiver Albert Wilson to a three-year, $24 million contract and Danny Amendola to a one-year contract. Wilson flashed during the season, but suffered a season-ending hip injury in Week 7 that unfortunately robbed the receiver of his elite athleticism. Amendola had a strong season but was not re-signed as the team underwent their previously mentioned roster purge.

Meanwhile, Landry was selected to the Pro Bowl in his first two years with the Browns. He also won a playoff game with Cleveland during the 2020 season.

Miami will hope this version of their roster purge turns out different than the one they underwent in the late 2010s.
